In a significant breakthrough for diagnostic medicine, a new clinical study has demonstrated the efficacy of the Sysmex PA-100 AST System, capable of detecting bacteriuria, i.e., the presence of bacteria in urine, and performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) in just 45 minutes. This technology, evaluated for the first time at Fundació Puigvert, has the potential to transform the diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs), and thus optimise the use of antibiotics, and reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

The prize is designed to reward and support teams of innovators who have undertaken the challenge of transforming the conventional clinical workflows for infectious diseases, thereby making greatest contribution to tackling the global issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).1 Since the prize launched in November 2014, more than 250 teams from around the world have applied, with Sysmex Astrego AB standing out as the sole recipient.
